InYo Karate Do
The techniques (waza) of In Yo Karate Do contain both hard method
techniques (Go ho waza) and soft method techniques (Ju ho waza). This correct
blend of techniques comes from the Japanese interpretation of the Chinese ‘Yin
Yang’ philosophy, these dual qualities are known as ‘In’ and ‘Yo’
respectively. ‘Inyodo’, meaning ‘The
Way of Yin and Yang’.
The inyo symbol has a large circle (Yo) that represents the universe.
Within this and connecting with it at just one point, there is a smaller circle
(In). The larger area is usually white, the smaller circle is red. When red, it
reflects the image of the sun disc on the Japanese flag and the white crescent
is seen as representative of the moon.

In Yo Yin Yang
In Yo can be translated as Hard and Soft, Fast and Slow, Linear and
Circular, Internal and External, In Yo is the balance of all things and is the
ideal name of a school that seeks such a balance in both mind and body. The
outside circle (Yo) represents the hard positive forces whilst the smaller
circle (In) represents the opposing soft negative forces. They are inseparable
as one is contained within the other. It is this correct balance of these
opposing forces that provides health and harmony within the Karate student,
this will give a understanding and ability to either control or strike an
opponent depending on the situation. This ability to be hard and soft is the
key and essence to harmony and success in the student’s Karate and Life.
